New Year's Eve Safety Tips

It’s New Year’s Eve! Another year has come and almost gone. Festivities won’t start up for several hours, which gives us plenty of time to help you prepare for a safe and fun night.

Whether your children will be ringing in the new year at home or with their friends, it’s important that they know how to have fun in a safe and mature manner. Here are some tips in setting the ground rules and making sure your kids abide by them.

When you sit your kids down to set those ground rules, make sure they know that you trust them and understand this isn’t a lecture. Open communication and treating them with respect will go a long way.

Ground Rules

No drinking and driving.

No fireworks within city limits.

Be home, or wherever you’re staying for the night, by curfew.

These are state laws that all minors have to obey. Make sure they know this isn’t some evil scheme to limit their fun and ruin their life. This is a life-and-death, stay out of jail, in your best interest situation.

It’s easy to get caught up in the fun of celebrating the New Year. Keep in contact with your kids. Make sure they check in when they get to their party. Ask who will be there and make sure it’s a safe environment with adult supervision.

It can seem overbearing to teens, but being a “helicopter mom” is better than getting a call from the police that your child’s in trouble. Remind them of this.

Establishing rules allows your kids to have fun within the boundaries you’ve set. With open communication, everyone can relax and enjoy New Year’s Eve.
